Labor Day Plans

Labor Day Activities
If you don’t have any fun outdoor plans for Labor Day and you are lucky enough to live near a Texas State Park hosting an event, I suggest you go.  If your nearest State or National Park isn’t having an event, try looking at your city’s event calendar for an activity.  Because rain and bad weather ruining my beach plans, I have compiled some State and National Park Labor day events.

Martin Dies, Jr. State Park, Jasper, TX
Martin Dies Park is having two separate events on Labor Day:
From 10 to 11 AM - create your own animal track booklet.  At the nature center, Rangers will assist in creating an animal track booklet that can be used to identify Texas wildlife.
From 2 to 3 PM – kids indoor nature painting.  If you are interested in art, this event will provide instruction on painting nature scenes.

Martin Creek Lake State Park, Tatum, TX
From 9 to 10 AM – fishing with a ranger.  If you want to learn the basics of fishing, head over to Martin Creek Lake State Park.  All equipment will be provided, or you can bring your own.

South Llano River State Park, Junction, TX
8:30 to 10:20 AM – early morning hike on Fawn Trail.  Meet up at the Park Headquarters for a 3-mile hike.  On the hike learn about wildlife and vegetation of the Central Texas Hill Country.  Make sure to bring water.

Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site, El Paso, TX
From 8 AM to 5:30 PM – an exhibit of Juan de Onate’s expedition in 1598.  The exhibit covers Onate’s attempt to create a kingdom north of the Rio Grande.  Don’t worry; the exhibit is in English and Spanish.

Padre Island National Seashore, North Padre Island, TX
From 1:00 to 1:45 PM. every Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday until October – Deck Talk.  Park Rangers will host an informal discussion on Padre Island’s natural and cultural history.  In addition, Rangers talk about items that have been found on Padre Island’s coastline.

If you want to check out more events and exhibit from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, check out their calendar here http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/calendar/ and the National Park Service here http://www.nps.gov/findapark/event-search.htm

So go ahead and let me know about your great Labor Day plans.

    1. I'd love to drive out there for the deck talk. Plus Padre Island State Park is starting beach walks. The only issue is that its a 2 hour drive, but I plan to give it a try.
